All-time top scorer and former captain of the Ivory Coast national team, Didier Drogba is an Ivorian player who has awed us in many ways than one has made history as he becomes the first player to play in a club he owns.
There have been player-managers but this is certainly a first. The skillful player had turned down offers from big clubs in England, China, Brazil, and Mexico. His reason for not going back to England is that he couldn’t play for any other club there except Chelsea.
As he becomes a player and co-owner at Phoenix Rising FC, he hopes to build on Americans’ growing interest in football and to guide the club into America’s Major League Soccer by 2020.
Happy to announce I have signed with @PHXRIsingFC and will be part of the ownership group hoping to take Phoenix to the MLS #Drogba2PHX
According to Mirror UK, he said;
“I don’t think there’s been another player and co-owner, but this shows you how things are changing, how the league is changing and how football is becoming attractive. And I’m really happy to have chosen this.”
